Chalk 4 Peace

Our class was assigned to design a logo for an international, non-profit organization known as Chalk 4 Peace. We were suggested to have a sole logo or icon for C4P, a color scheme, as well as the words of the organization (evident enough).

It took about four or five drafts before I came to a final product I really felt satifised with. One that I felt would best symbolize the organization. The rough draft (below) was to show a globe in a smudge-like texture, that I made with a translucent blur brush in Adobe Illustrator CS5. The idea was to give it a semi-translucent, chalk look.

Rough draft. Testing out colors and chalk-like effects.

It was my first time using Illustrator in the CS5-edition; apart from the overall look of the icons and the width tool, there weren’t too many differences worth noting.
I felt the rough draft was too messy altogether. The logo had too many variations of color, many of which were difficult to read.

"Chalk 4 Peace" second draft. Airbrush effect, size 3. Used Adobe Illustrator CS5.

For the second draft (above), I decided to keep the globe I originally made in the first draft, but added the “Chalk” effect-brush stroke-style on the stick figures (Chalk – Scribble. Uniform stroke style. Size 1). A major revision was to simply make the text, well, readable. To do so, I decided to keep it the stereotypical chalk white-color, which I felt presented itself much cleaner and basic.

In the third and fourth drafts alike, I decided to add in type-font (Myriad Pro, Regular style, 24 pt.) of the organization’s web site and blog. Seeing it didn’t fit the overall pattern, and realizing that it was not a poster I was creating, I would omit the text.

By the time I did the fourth draft, I decided to remove the globe logo and add a peace symbol to the logo. The colors, inside and behind the text was all used with the chalk style to the brush stroke. I really liked how it came out.

However, for the fifth and final draft, I removed all the colors in the background to give it a cleaner look, and below is the final product. In Photoshop CS5, I added the “Reticulation” filter in order to give it an asphalt background.
